Your Job Title Is a Story. The Tasks Are the Truth.
People keep asking whether AI will take "marketing" or "nursing" or "software engineering." Those are costumes. The machine does not hire costumes. It eats tasks, and titles rot from the inside.

Ask a room whether AI will take software engineering and you will get a holy war. Ask the same room whether AI will write the boilerplate tests, the migration script, the first pass at the ticket, and the summary for people who did not attend, and you will get silence, because everyone already knows.
Titles are identity. Tasks are inventory. Companies buy inventory.
This is the practical core under displacement, augmentation, takeover, the sleepwalk, and the UBI argument. If you cannot see your work as a pile of tasks, you cannot see which parts of you are already on the liquidation list.
How to do the inventory without a consultant
Write down a normal week. Not your job description. The job description is fiction with keywords. The week is what happened.
For each block of time, ask three questions.
Can a current model do a first version of this that a tired manager would accept?
If it fails, does the failure show up as a lawsuit, a lost customer, a safety incident, or just a slightly worse paragraph?
Would the organization still need me if this block vanished?
If the answers are yes, no, and not really, you are sitting on a trapdoor. You can still have a good year. Trapdoors are patient.
If the answers are no, yes, and yes, you have a little time. Use it. Time is the actual scarce asset, not another certification that duplicates a chatbot.
The middle is the kill zone
Senior people still own relationships, blame, and the story the board wants to hear. They will be late to feel this, which is why so many of them sound calm on podcasts.
Junior people are losing the work that used to be their tuition. That is a crisis, and it is already visible in hiring data if you are willing to look.
The middle is where titles go to become haunted houses. You have enough salary to be a target and not enough political cover to be a fixture. Your expertise is real, and a lot of it has been turned into a pattern a model can imitate well enough. You become the person who "oversees" a system you no longer fully touch. Oversight without touch is a short job.
If you are in that band, augmentation is not optional and loyalty is not a plan. Get closer to the customer, the regulator, the physical asset, or the P&L. Get so close that deleting you deletes a relationship, not a workflow.
A note on honesty inside companies
I have sat in conversations where leaders say they will never replace people, they will only empower them. Some of them mean it that week. Then the board pack arrives.
If you lead, you owe a task-level map to the people who report to you. Not a vibe. A map. Here is what the tools will take. Here is what we still need humans for. Here is how we will measure you when volume is easy. If you cannot produce that map, you are not a leader. You are a weather report.
If you follow, stop waiting for that map. Make your own. Keep it off the shared drive if you have to. Use it to decide what you practice after dinner.
The through line
Displacement is the inventory shrinking until the title is empty.
Augmentation is you grabbing the parts of the inventory that still have a premium.
Takeover is management buying the cheap parts of the inventory from a vendor.
Sleepwalking is refusing to look at the inventory because the title still sounds like a life.
UBI is what countries talk about when the inventory of paid human tasks gets too small to carry the population.
You do not have to like any of that. You do have to stop confusing the costume with the work.
Open the week. Circle the trapdoors. Move your body, your reputation, and your leverage onto the work that still requires a person who can be trusted when it goes wrong.
That is not a slogan. It is a Tuesday habit. Tuesdays are how the future actually arrives.

Will AI Take My Job? A Straight Answer
Yes for parts of it. Maybe for the whole seat. No for every human role. Here is how to tell which of those three is true for you, without the usual hedging.

No job is permanently AI-proof. Some have more runway: physical mess, human trust, regulated liability, and work where being wrong is expensive.

No. It is too late to change careers blindly. AI makes lazy switches riskier and targeted switches more valuable. Here is how to decide without burning another year.
